Queens Bridge Road: Restorative Home Renovation

Back in 2019, we were contacted by the homeowners of a property on Queens Bridge Road, a popular street in Dalston, London. The clients had been living in their home for a couple of years, and they felt that it was in need of some internal updates – both practically and aesthetically.

Key points from the brief

The project scope was defined once we’d had our initial design consultation with the client, and a few standout aspects of the work included:

Period feature restoration

The property dated back to the Victorian era, and many of its original features could be found in various rooms throughout the home – including high ceilings, and feature fireplaces in the bedrooms and lounge. While our clients were keen to modernise, they didn’t want to omit the heritage of their home, so these aspects needed a complete, careful, thorough restoration. We needed a renovation approach that was mindful of these elements, and we also wanted to be able to emphasise them in each room.

Internal works: wiring and plumbing updates

Our proposal for the client included a full update of the existing plumbing and electrical systems. Given that it was an old property, finding ways to be as efficient as possible in terms of energy was beneficial – the renovation created an opportunity to improve this.

Designing a rear extension

As well as renovating the current home, our clients expressed that they’d like to explore the possibility of extending and creating new living spaces. Once we’d reviewed the floorplan, our architects and technical design experts determined that a rear extension would be a viable option for the property. We developed a design for this new space, and our project management team submitted a planning application on behalf of the client.

Construction stage: Turning the property into an operational site

Once planning application had been sought, and a final bill of quantities was ready, our builders started working onsite. Our team started the work with a focus on restoring the original high ceilings across several rooms in the property, while our electricians carried out a full rewiring. Our plumbers also carried out their necessary updates, working in the kitchen and bathrooms of the home. The kitchen was actually part of the rear extension, so our electricians and plumbers played a key role in bringing this new living space to life. While this was ongoing, our decorators and joiners were tasked with updating the home’s remaining period features – this involved restoring several fireplaces, bannisters, and ornate mouldings. Once these works were completed, flooring fitters came onsite to start laying new hard wood surfaces across the property.

Once the building work for the extension was complete, we started decorating the property throughout – and our clients opted for striking, bold, glamorous regency-inspired decor throughout. This meant lots of deep, jewel shades, adorned finishes for fixtures, and statement lighting. We simplified the palette for the kitchen, keeping it modern, light, and airy, complemented perfectly with the new ceiling window.

The final result

Our Queens Bridge Road renovation brought a new lease of life into the property – through creating a brand new living space, restoring heritage features, and choosing a bold interior palette, our clients felt as though they came back to a completely new property. They benefitted from everything that a full home renovation brings; updated electrical and plumbing systems, fresh decor throughout, and new flooring, fixtures and more.
