In one recent loft conversion, the new staircase presented a unique opportunity to rethink how movement connects the home. Instead of simply inserting access to the loft, our team designed a self-supporting timber structure that stands independently, rising through the core of the space like a sculptural spine. Its position was carefully determined to optimise headroom, circulation flow and structural performance. The staircase was engineered to remain visually lightweight while being structurally robust, using discreet anchoring only at the floor plates. From there, our joiners handcrafted the continuous handrail, smoothing the timber through layers of shaping, sanding and finishing until it felt like a natural, tactile extension of the architecture. The design strikes a quiet balance — refined, modern and minimal, yet subtly rooted in London’s architectural character through warm timber tones and soft contours.

In another home renovation, the staircase became a moment of atmosphere and sensory experience rather than a structural feature. Here, the transformation was driven by material finishes and lighting integration. Our designers and lighting specialists introduced soft, indirect illumination along the treads and handrail, creating a welcoming glow that highlights the rhythm of movement while enhancing safety. A tailored carpet finish added warmth underfoot and softened acoustics, reshaping the staircase into a comfortable and intimate transition space, particularly effective in the evening when the lighting gently animates its form.

Though different in expression — one sculptural and structural, the other quiet and atmospheric — both examples reflect the same philosophy.
